One Health and Cyanobacteria
Monitoring the Invisible Threads in a High Carbon World
One Health is a collaborative, multisystemic approach that recognizes the inextricable link between the health of people, animals, plants, and our shared environment.
Cyanobacteria are a ubiquitous and essential part of our planet's history, but when environmental conditions shift, they can proliferate into Harmful Algal Blooms—or CyanoHABs. These blooms do not exist in isolation; they are a fluid threat that moves through the ecosystem and food chain.
CyanoHABs
From Ancient Life to Modern Ecological Threats
While often referred to as "blue-green algae," cyanobacteria are actually ancient photosynthetic bacteria. They have existed for over 3.5 billion years and were the primary organisms responsible for the Great Oxygenation Event that created our early atmosphere.
However, in modern ecosystems, certain species can proliferate rapidly under specific conditions (high carbon dioxide, nutrient loading, and stagnant water). When these populations explode, they are deemed Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (CyanoHABs).
